Professional makeup artist Diana at FABRIC’s 10th Anniversary fashion show in Tempe, Arizona, celebrating after creating 1950s runway looks.

Sharing a moment with Marna Broida, the creative visionary behind See You, Doll, at the FABRIC 10th Anniversary show! It was an honor to bring her 1950s-inspired runway vision to life through professional makeup artistry.

This past weekend was such a whirlwind of creativity! I had the pleasure of being part of the FABRIC 10th Anniversary celebration here in Tempe, Arizona, providing professional makeup artistry for the runway debut of the See You Doll pajama collection.

While my daily life at Makeup By Diana usually revolves around being an Arizona bridal makeup artist and prepping clients for high-end events, stepping back onto the fashion show circuit was an incredible change of pace. I spent years in the fashion show world before finding my niche in luxury wedding makeup, but experimenting with runway trends keeps my skills sharp and my perspective fresh.

The Fast-Paced Reality of Runway Makeup
Fashion shows are a completely different beast than a quiet bridal suite. We had a tight schedule: 12 models in a six-hour window. To ensure every look was cohesive and delivered on time, I blocked out exactly 30 minutes per model.
One pro tip I used to maximize efficiency? I had the models arrive with their foundation and brows already set. This allowed me to focus entirely on the designer’s specific vision: a classic 1950s vintage makeup look.

1950s Glamour: Design vs. Personal Preference
The designer requested a very specific mid-century aesthetic – think bold winged liner and perfectly defined lips. As a professional makeup artist in AZ, my job is to execute the creative director’s vision perfectly.
Interestingly, a few models asked for their “usual” makeup style instead. Part of being a pro is knowing how to politely decline and explain that runway makeup isn’t about the individual – it’s about the collection’s story. Unlike event makeup, which needs to look flawless in person and up-close, runway makeup is designed to be high-impact and visible from the back of the house under intense stage lights.

Even though I spent the day doing “fast” makeup for the catwalk, the principles of color theory and facial structure are the same ones I bring to my Arizona bridal clients. Pushing my creative boundaries at events like FABRIC ensures that when you sit in my chair, you’re getting a seasoned expert who can handle any lighting, skin type, or style request.
It was a long, high-energy day, but watching those looks come to life under the spotlights made every minute worth it.
