When Not to Book a Makeup Artist

Let me start with a true story. A client reached out to me recently, interested in booking Makeup By Diana for her and her daughter for an upcoming wedding. However, her daughter was still not sure if she wanted her makeup done and I understood that she had unpleasant experiences with other makeup artists in the past, resulting in her being unhappy with the results.
I realized again how important it is for a makeup artist to not only provide great service but also really listen to their clients. As professional makeup artists, we should always take the time to understand each of our clients’ preferences, educate them about the process, making sure their makeup aligns with how they imagine their look. For example, what might feel like a soft look to the artist could be “too much makeup” for the client. Communication is everything.

Now, let me get back to the topic. When should you NOT hire a makeup artist?

As someone who has worked as a professional makeup artist in Arizona for over 15 years, I’ve come up with 10 reasons – I’d like to call them the “IFs.”

If you have allergies to multiple products and ingredients, as it can be challenging to find the right products

If you are very picky and hard to please (if you don’t like certain things, it might be difficult for an artist to meet your expectations)

If you are highly skilled at doing your own makeup and don’t trust others (some people are simply more comfortable doing their own makeup, which is okay)

If you are particular about certain features and expect exact replication (reproducing an exact look is not realistic)

If you wear the same look every day and want it recreated for an event (daily makeup is different from event makeup)

If you don’t feel comfortable with the artist

If you only want minimal makeup (for example just foundation and blush), as this does not require a professional service

If you feel the artist’s fee is too high (don’t ask for a discount)

If you expect the artist to use specific brands or products you have heard about (artists select products based on performance)

If you are simply unsure (it is better to wait until you feel ready)

As a professional, I believe that booking a makeup artist should be an enjoyable experience with no stress.
If you’re looking for a makeup artist in Arizona (whether you are local or coming from out of state), I’d love to chat with you! Feel free to reach out to Makeup By Diana with any questions. I am here to help you decide if booking my professional makeup services is the right choice for you.
