As a makeup artist, I often receive inquiries from potential clients asking if I provide both makeup and hair services. I believe that this common question comes from a misunderstanding: many people assume that a makeup artist automatically does hair. However, the reality is that makeup artistry and hairstyling are two entirely separate specialties that require different skills, training and passion.
WHY I FOCUS EXCLUSIVELY ON MAKEUP
While attending esthetics and makeup school, I spent many hours perfecting the art of applying makeup, from natural looks to glamorous bridal styles. However, hair styling was not part of the curriculum. Unlike beauty school for hairstylists, where makeup is only briefly covered, professional makeup education focuses solely on skin, products, techniques and artistry, but not hair.
Some artists may offer both hair and makeup services, often learning hairstyling through other avenues. However, I’ve personally never felt a passion for hair. To be completely honest, I don’t even have the talent to style my own hair (and that’s me being real with you, ). I couldn’t, in good conscience, charge for something outside my area of expertise. My goal is to provide exceptional results and a stress-free experience, and I believe that comes from focusing on what I do best – makeup.
Here’s another reason I don’t combine both services: time and quality. On your wedding day, time is precious and so is the quality of work you’re receiving. Let’s imagine one person handling both hair and makeup for an entire bridal party. Can you picture how long that would take? More importantly, how exhausting it would be for the artist?
When one person tries to manage both roles, the risk of burnout increases and the quality of their work may decline by the end of the day. Plus, the overall timeline would be much longer, causing unnecessary stress for the bride, bridal party and the artist .
You might think hiring one person for both services saves money, but that’s not usually the case. Performing both hair and makeup is double the workload, so an experienced professional will charge accordingly. A novice may offer both services for a lower rate, but ask yourself: do you really want to take that risk on the most important day of your life?
