“I don’t want to look like a clown.” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this from clients during their first consultation. You’d think the first thing anyone does when looking for a makeup artist is to check out their work, right? And if you like what you see, you reach out. But even after my clients have browsed my portfolio, I often hear this same concern when we chat over the phone or discuss their desired look in person. So, let’s break down what “clown makeup” really means and what it absolutely doesn’t mean when you’re in Makeup By Diana’s chair.

Face Makeup
“Clown-like” makeup often means a face that’s overly covered in thick layers of product. It’s when the foundation is caked on, powder is visible and contour is harsh and exaggerated. Heavy contouring and bright blush can work for certain styles, but for most people, especially those with mature skin, it’s a no-go. Instead of minimizing wrinkles, these techniques can actually highlight them. And don’t even get me started on foundation that doesn’t blend well or is the wrong color and undertone! Proper blending is key to achieving a natural, flattering look.

Eye Makeup
I can’t count how many times I’ve seen eyeshadow that isn’t blended and which creates harsh demarcation lines. Sometimes, dark eyeshadows are brought up too high, almost reaching the eyebrows, with no clear finishing point. And thick, overdrawn eyebrows that dominate the face? They distract from the overall look instead of enhancing it. Your brows should frame your eyes, not steal the show.

Cheeks
When it comes to blush, color and tone are everything. Mismatched blush and lip colors, especially when they’re both bright, can throw off the entire look. For example, bright pink lips paired with terracotta cheeks just don’t work together. Matching tones creates harmony and balance.

Lips
Bold lip colors can be stunning, but it’s all about the application. Overlined lips don’t flatter everyone and extreme lip liner that stands out against a softer lipstick can be jarring. When done right, a bold lip enhances your features without overpowering them.

So, when clients tell me they don’t want “clown makeup”, this is what I believe they’re referring to. Rest assured, in Makeup By Diana’s chair, you’ll never look like a clown. My approach is all about enhancing your natural beauty with seamless blending, harmonious colors and a polished finish.
