While much attention is given to preparing for wedding day makeup, the post-wedding beauty routine is often overlooked and rarely discussed. Have you thought that your skin may go through some changes after wearing makeup for hours, especially if you’re not someone who wears makeup on a daily basis?
What challenges might I face?” you might be thinking. Well, after wearing a full face of makeup, your skin could experience breakouts, dryness or even excess oil production. Since wedding makeup is designed to resist longer than your everyday makeup, this can sometimes cause irritation if your skin isn’t used to many products, especially long-lasting.
So what should I do?” Well, makeup removal is a must. No matter how exhausted you are after your wedding day, remove your makeup before going to bed. I know, as a newlywed, the last thing on your mind is your skincare routine – but trust me, it makes a difference. Leaving makeup on overnight can clog your pores and you might wake up to breakouts in the following days. So take notes or bookmark this page.

1. Use a gentle and targeted remover
Begin with an eye makeup remover specifically formulated for sensitive skin to gently remove waterproof mascara, eyeliner and eyeshadow (Neutrogena does its job great). Then, follow up with a two-step cleansing routine for your face. I suggest a cleansing oil or balm (Neutrogena Melting Balm)  to dissolve the makeup, followed by a water-based cleanser to wash away any residue. By using this double-cleanse method, your skin is thoroughly cleaned without being stripped of its natural oils.
2. Don’t skip the toner
After cleansing, toning your skin is key to remove any last traces of makeup and to balance the pH of your skin. It also tightens pores and preps your skin for the next steps in your routine, like serums or moisturizers.
3. Hydrate and restore
Wedding makeup paired with stress can sometimes make your skin drier, thus, using a rich, hydrating moisturizer can be a great treat. Adding a hydrating serum or facial oil (Sonia Roselli Water Oil) to lock in moisture is an extra step that can boost your skin’s glow.
4. Exfoliate (but gently)
A day or two after your wedding, use a gentle exfoliator to help your skin shed dead cells and maintain its glow. Over-exfoliation can irritate the skin, so opt for a mild scrub to reveal smoother skin and use it no more than 1-2 times a week. Doing this helps avoid clogged pores and post-wedding breakouts.
5. Pamper with masks
To help your skin recover from the long day, indulge in some pampering with a hydrating or soothing face mask (for example, sheet masks, overnight hydration masks or calming clay masks). Choose one that contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera or chamomile for hydration and calming effects.
6. Treat yourself to a facial
If time allows, book a professional facial a few days after your wedding to deeply cleanse, exfoliate and rejuvenate your skin. A facial is a fantastic way to refresh your complexion, especially if you’re heading off on a honeymoon and want to maintain that wedding day glow.
7. Mind your diet and hydration
Skin recovery isn’t just about what you apply topically. It’s also influenced by what you consume. Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins and help your skin stay hydrated from within. Eating antioxidant-rich foods like berries, leafy greens and nuts can help your skin repair itself, too.
8. Protect your skin during your honeymoon
If you’re jetting off on a tropical honeymoon, don’t forget to protect your skin from sun damage. Pack a broad-spectrum sunscreen (my suggestion is SPF 50) and reapply every couple of hours, especially if you’ll be spending time outdoors. This way, your skin would be protected from getting damaged and it would prevent premature aging. Out of all the products that I tried, Shiseido worked the best.
9. Restore your eye area
Your eyes may feel extra tired from all the excitement, emotions and photography. Applying a cooling eye gel or using under-eye masks to soothe puffiness and dark circles is an excellent idea. Look for ingredients like caffeine or cucumber to brighten and refresh the under-eye area.

As a reminder, the secret to a lasting glow lies not only in the makeup you wear but also in how you care for your skin afterward. Pamper yourself, give your skin the attention it deserves and enjoy the beautiful journey ahead!
