I hear more often than I would like “My makeup artist canceled on me right before my wedding”. This is a big no-no. No bride-to-be should ever have to experience this. On the other hand, I hear from past brides who say they hated their makeup on their wedding day. Exactly – they hated it. All of this breaks my heart.
As an experienced makeup artist specializing in weddings, I would like to address some red flags that could potentially lead to such experiences. If you notice even one of these…run!
NO PORTFOLIO or LOW QUALITY PHOTOS
If a makeup artist cannot provide a portfolio of her/his work or if the photos they have are of poor quality or even filtered, this could indicate a lack of professionalism or skill. And let’s not forget those who only showcase makeup applied on themselves.
POOR COMMUNICATION
Are you waiting “forever” to get a reply? Or noticing unprofessional language and lack of clarity? These are indicators that the artist is not reliable, organized or serious about their work. Also, calling clients they never met before “babe”, “sweetie”, “baby girl”, “girly”, “hey you” and so on…it makes me wonder every single time.
LACKING EXPERIENCE WITH BRIDAL MAKEUP
Not every makeup artist fit the job of working in the wedding industry. Using products and techniques that guarantee the longevity of the makeup, as well as looking great in photos, requires advance training and experience. Not to forget, being aware that there is a timeline that needs to be taken into consideration, is also important.
NO CONTRACT OR TERMS
An artist who doesn’t offer some paperwork outlining services, pricing and cancellation policies might not be operating professionally, leaving you unprotected if something goes wrong.
NEGATIVE OR INCONSISTENT REVIEWS
Check the artist’s online presence, read reviews and make sure they are legitimate. Do not just rely on what their website showcase. Use platforms like Google, Yelp, Wedding Wire, Zola and other major sites. If you see a pattern of negative feedback, it’s best to pass.
LIMITED PRODUCTS
A professional would carry a variety of pro products, brands and pretty much everything that is needed for a makeover. If they only offer a limited range of products and shades or ask you to provide your own makeup (especially face products), then they are obviously offering this services as a hobby. Do not ignore when products from the discount stores are being used.
WORKING UNSANITARY
Poor hygiene, such as using dirty brushes, not sanitizing products, double dipping or not using disposable applicators is a major red flag. It can lead to infections or skin issues, especially on a day as important as your wedding.
UNCLEAR PRICING OR HIDDEN FEES
Clear and upfront communication about costs plays an important role to avoid surprises on your wedding day. If the artist is not clear about pricing or adds unexpected fees, this is a red flag. For example: travel fees, early morning start time, additional artist, gratuity are just a few examples.
REFUSES TO DO A BRIDAL MAKEUP TRIAL/PRE-VIEW
A makeup trial is very important to give you a feel of how you would look on your wedding day. It is a great time to see the work on your own, how you and the artist interact and not lastly, to notice if you have any allergies to any products. If you are told that you don’t need one…think twice.
HIGH PRESSURE SALES TACTICS
Beware of artists who push you to book immediately without giving you time to consider your options. High-pressure sales tactics can indicate desperation or a lack of confidence in their services. You definitely do not want to fall into that trap
By being aware of these red flags, you can avoid unnecessary stress and disappointment, making sure that you find a professional makeup artist who not only meets your expectations but exceeds them. Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life and you deserve to feel confident and beautiful. You are special! Take the time to thoroughly check your options and remember – your peace of mind is worth the effort.
If you are looking for a reliable business, I would love the opportunity to be part of your special day. As a reference, you can check some of the stories that past brides/clients shared about working with Makeup By Diana.
